The movie is about the apartheid system in South Africa. It describes the conditions around Nelson Mandela`s arrest and imprisonment first on Robben Island and later on in Pollsmore high security prison, in an offside well guarded prison area. Beside that it also describes the job and family conditions on the Island.
The population in South Africa at that time was about 20 millions blacks and a white minority. The whites were running the government through the apartheid system, through which saw the blacks as just another sort of animals and treated them like that.
James Gregory got the job as leader of the censure office in the prison on Robben Island. He and his family moved there and had to live in a little colony of whites. It shoves his problems to his superiors, subordinates and colleagues to one side and the other the conditions in his own family with a rather ambitious wife who wants him to move forward in the service to get a higher rank and better pay, so they can afford a good education for the children.
In between it shoves the conditions between James and Nelson Mandela and his wife and how his opinion of the system slowly changes. He ends up feeling the system is wrong and the way they treat the prisoners is bad. In the same time he feels the pressure from his superior in the security system, which holds on almost to the end.
