The movie is directed by Bille August. He has among other titles directed “Pelle Erobren” and “Busters Verden”. The title is “Goodbye Bafana”. I think the title fits well to the movie. I think the genre is something between a documentary and a biography. The target group for this movie is, I think, everyone able to understand it, somewhere about fifteen years and up. The language in the movie is indeed not easy to understand but nor is it very hard (if you listen properly). One thing that makes the language harder to understand is the different accents people speak in the movie. That is always something that makes spoken language harder to understand.
The movie takes place in South Africa in 1968, in the period of apartheid. James Gregory is a prison guard, whose job is to take care of the imprisoned people from ANC. And after as he grew up in Transkei and learned the language Xhosa and therefore understands every word they say, he is perfect for this job.
Nelson Mandela had a wife, whom he only was allowed take visit from once every half year. Once she visited him, they suddenly started talking Xhosa. They claimed that they were talking family business but after as James understood what they said, he knew that they were talking politics. Nelson Mandela’s wife (Winnie Mandela) was arrested as soon as she returned to her own country.
