They refer to themselves as a “mental servicestation, where the curious person can be enlightened, pleased and challenged”

Founded in 2004, with its 20.700 square meters spread out over 10 levels, ARoS is one of northern Europe’s biggest art-museums.

The Museum is formed from a giant cube, which is sliced though by a “museum-street”. The street stretches from the northwest side of the cube to the southeast side, and is free of admission.

In the middle of the street, a giant spiral-formed staircase is raised, which is the main element inside the cube. The staircase also provides a stability to the museum.

The cube is a symbol of the earthly and of materialism

The story – Dante

The concept of the building is based on Dante’s tale “The devine comedy”

The 9 spaces work as the 9 death circles (inferno), and the staircase as Purgatory (the path from hell to heaven), and at last, Your Rainbow Panorama as heaven or paradise.

The shape and style of the elements is also a reconstruction of the tale.

The 9 spaces dark, small and “unpleasant” (no natural light)

The Purgatory Long and “never ending” (open and free space around it)

Your rainbow panorama Up high, Circle (infinity), beautiful, colourfull, “on top of the world”
