Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of The United States from March 1861 until April 1865. He was born Hodgenville, Kentucky and grew up in the western frontier in Kentucky and Indiana. His father’s name was Thomas Lincoln and his mother’s name was Nancy Hanks. His mother died when he was 9 years old, it deeply affected him. One year over his mother’s death his dad married to Sarah Bush Johnston a Kentucky widow with three children of her own.
Lincolns first interest was Ann Rutledge, he met her when he moved to New Salem. They weren’t engaged but in a relationship. Ann Rutledge died at the age of 22 on August 25, 1845, most likely of typhoid fever (is a bacterial infection due to Salmonella typhi that causes symptoms). Then in 1830 Lincoln met Mary Owens from Kentucky he met her when she was visiting her sister. Late in 1836 he agreed to get married with Mary if she returned to New Salem. She did return in November 1836, but in 16 August 1837, Lincoln wrote Mary a letter but she didn’t reply, then the courtship ended. In 1840 Lincoln became engaged with Mary Todd and their first wedding was set in January 1841 but it got canceled because they broke off their engagement at Lincolns initiative. One year later they met again at a party and married on 4 November 1842.
