Truslov Adams describe the American as the state where a person is ready to do what it takes be something of their choice. That can be anything from a richer, fuller, better life to family and happiness. Thomas Jefferson describes this as where a man with the right attitude can not be defeated from achieving his goals, and Abraham Lincoln described it as when you can do whatever you want with the right mindset. This is in essence what made the puritans search for new land. They wanted to purify their religion, they wanted to make it better, so they made it their goal to find somewhere to settle where they could “re-do” their religion. This could be described as the American dream, this goal of purifying their religion, and they had the right mind set to do this.
So is it the same today?
Well everything is relative, the so called dream is different from person to person. For one person the American dream could be to own their own bar i La, and for someone else it is to be the next Bill Gates aka the richest guy on the planet. And for someone it his to have a family or a dog. It is mostly the economical success that is portrayed in movies and books, but they are all relevant.
