The article “A New Black American Dream” is by author and journalist Denene Millner. Her article was published in The New York Times, on April 1, 2018. Millner tells us about her grandmother who died when her father was a young boy and therefore had to work in factories to support his family economically. Throughout the article, Millner argues that Americans do not treat African American people as equals and that we should think of a new way to look at the American dream and create a “new paradigm that lets go of the all-too-elusive American dream.” (ll.74-75) Millner worries for her children and her hopes of them getting a better life then herself which she expresses by saying; “Now that I have children of my own, I am learning that the chances that they will end up better than me are slim, and that in fact they’re in danger of being sucked back into poverty.” (ll.2-4) Millner uses a lot of ethos and pathos and some logos to make her arguments more credible, logic and to give the audience a strong emotion towards the problem. The view of Millner’s article will be further analysed through a focus on the structure, style and intention of the text.
