In these days it is more acceptable to be dressed like an adult when you are at the stage of becoming a teenager compared to the 80’s and 90’s. Sometimes it can be difficult to decide the age of a girl who dresses like an adolescent and in this short story, “The Victim”, Cathy seems like one of those who are being mistaken by others. It is normal to experiment and dress up at home, but to realize it in public is a bit awkward. People just stare at people like Cathy, who is wearing make-up, fake nails and so on. What she is carrying on her body is in the category of what a grown up woman could be dressed in.

When Cathy is eleven she prefers to be dressed like an adult woman, but it has a cost. She gets beaten up by the boys in school, who have a different view on Cathy than on other girls. In the early stage of a boy’s life it is difficult to see the differences between a grown up woman and the example of a girl who performs like other women. They pretend it can not harm Cathy if they hit her because she is different than other girls, but it ends up with, Cathy gets a few bruises and when she gets raped her intention is to make a big scene out of it and therefore she gets spoiled for days. She is that kind of a child who needs attention in the weekdays. It seems like her father, Vic, does care about her, but he also confronts her about her clothing.
