What do we do when something unexpected happens? Do we protest against it or do we have to find a way to just deal with it? It’s not always easy to know what to do in this kind of situation, or if you should do anything at all. In this short story we see a similar situation between a mother and daughter. This short story is written by Abigail Ulman and she is a successful writer from Australia given that she was named Best Young Australian Novelist in 2016.
In this this story we’re presented to Frida Boyelski and her daughter Ruthie. Frida came to Australia at the age of twenty-six with a desire to get married, have a daughter and give her daughter the best life, and opportunities.
Frida then gave birth to her daughter Ruthie, which in the story is sixteen years ago. We don’t hear about Frida’s physical appearance, but we hear about her desire to have a daughter from the very beginning and the fact that the one daughter she has is actually a man has turned her world upside down. Frida and Ruthie are Jews and we know that because multiple Jewish words appear in the text, for example when the rabbi comes by, who is a kind of advisor within Judaism and when Frida throws a shiva, which is a Jewish mourning for the dead. Frida also works in a nursing home and has worked there for the last twelve years. We don’t hear about Ruthie’s physical appearance as a girl, but we do know that she has a boyfriend named Jack who’s happy for her transformation.
