Analytical essay of the article “My hidden journey: A professional soccer player reveals he is gay”
Having bad mental health is a problem that sort of goes under the radar. No one can see if you are struggling if you don’t tell them. It is so easy to put on a fake smile. When you are around people you can seem so happy, and act like everything is just fine. But the moment you are alone you just feel so empty inside. A lot of celebrities feel this way. It is especially happening in the world of football. Right now, there are a lot of stories coming out about former and present footballers being gay. It can be so hard to tell the world that you are gay. In the article “My hidden journey: A professional soccer player reveals he is gay”, Thomas Beattie, a former footballer, takes us through his journey and gives us an insight into his life, and how he felt being gay in the football world.
The article is written by Thomas Beattie. Thomas Beattie started his football career when he was 9 years old. He was really good and quickly moved up through the ranks. He earned himself a youth contract but when he was 18 years old, he started to lose his love of football. He was really confused and did not know what to do with himself. He had to get away, and therefore he got a scholarship in the US. He loved it. He felt like he was finally free. After a couple of years, he moved back to Europe and hated it. The pressure came back and he got even more confused with himself and who he was. He wanted to take time to work on himself, but the pressure was too high for him to quit football. For the rest of his career, he moved back and forth from club to club. His career ended when he collided with an opponent in a match and was seriously injured. He then finally had the time to work on himself. He finally broke free. “The beauty that came out of it was an epiphany that I no longer had to run from myself.” (Page 3 lines 126-127). He got peace, and finally, he finally let go of all the pressure. The target group of this article is people that don’t have peace with who they are. He wants those people to take a break and work on themselves until they figure out who they are.
