Suburbs have become big since 50 years back. Judgment over the in-between thing of countryside and city rose as well. You can call them poor, since they can’t afford something in the city, workers for all the fabrics the outskirt of cities have, and also lazy because they can’t take care of a farm. Maeve Binchy has written this story to put focus on the Suburbs bad reputation or the lack of knowledge of the environment. The author herself has lived in the suburbs; therefore, she must know a lot about it and how other people have reacted to her living there in her life.
The theme of the story is “Judgement/acceptance” primarily of the suburbs. Bonnies' friends, Justine and Sheila categorize her hometown as city and countryside, both of them misjudge the suburbs and Bonnie is too ashamed to have them over at her place again. Her parents, on the other hand, accept it, they had worked hard to find a house before the prices went up, and they like the well-kept gardens. Bonnie Doesn’t like it, she thinks it too much of the same. In her thoughts, she says “The suburbs. Worse than living in the country” She hates it because her friends mock her in school.
