Alexander Betts - “Why Brexit happened and what to do next
On the 23rd of Juni 2016, a referendum in the United Kingdom was held. The referendum should decide if the UK should remain a member of, or leave the European Union. 51,89% of the 33.551.893 valid votes, was in favor of leaving the Union. Former Prime-minister David Cameron announced his resignation, the day after the referendum and left office the 13th of July.
Alexander Betts is a British social scientist, and talked in TEDSummit back in 2016. He talked about what Brexit represented for the world, what people can do about it, and how people should respond to it.
Alexander Betts is a professor of Forced Migration and International Affair at Oxford University and assist in politics and economics of refugee assistance. He has written over 50 articles, book chapters and working papers that has been published in many Journals of Refugees. His language can be hard to understand due to the complicated vocabulary he uses, and also complicated words such as “xenophobia”, “disillusionment with the political establishment” and “the ugly face of exclusionary and antagonistic globalization.”. Even though his language can be hard to understand, he does a very good job at explaining and arguing his point, which makes the talk show easier to understand as his opinions are clearly described.
