1. Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the outbreak of mad-cow-disease in the United Kingdom, with a focus on the crisis management and the changes in farming practices. The study
investigates how mad-cow-disease can be transmitted, the structural changes of prions during transmission and the prions journey through the body towards the brain. It will be discussed whether the national response to the crisis was hysteria or not. Several peer review sources and articles have been investigated to obtain knowledge of what madcow-disease is and what causes the disease. Through the research, a connection was found between infectious prions in food and cellular prions in the body. This connection means that the oral ingesmad-cow-disease in cattle and the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. It can be concluded that the government's management of the outbreak of mad-cow-disease caused an economic crisis and spread fear amongst the population. This project also concludes that the transmission route of mad-cow-disease is primarily through oral ingestion, although the disease can also be transmitted by heredity.
