Section 3 – Surfing

0. When talking about surfing, we think of surfing as a water sport. The idea is to catch

a wave and ride it back to shore, though it might sound easier than it is. The sport

was invented by the Polynesians around 4000 years ago. Today, surfing is

practiced in many different countries, mostly popular in Australia, the US, and

Northern Europe. Hawaii is considered the center of surfing, hosting the

international surfing championships every year.

1. To get started, you need a surfboard or a stand-up paddle board to get practicing. A

lot of surfing destinations have surf schools and camps for beginners where you

can buy lessons. Often it is possible to sign up for a multi-day program which

focuses on surfing basics. These surfing lessons start off with instruction and safety

rules on land, before students are allowed into the waves.

2. Most modern surfboards are made of fiberglass which makes them lighter than the

original ones made of solid wood. Newer designs make the boards easier to paddle
