When the metoo movement first appeared in October 2017, it spread like wildfire, in just a couple of months thousands of women from all over the world came forward with their stories of sexual assault. Alyssa Milano started it all, inspiring millions of women to speak out. A Washington Post poll reveals that an estimated 33 million women have been sexually harassed, and an estimated 14 million have experienced sexual abuse in work-related incidents.
Women are finally speaking up about some horrendous experiences, and it seems as though the world is truly realising the severity of this situation. Women have always been afraid to admit that they have been raped or harassed, throughout history women were seen as inferior to men, and few would believe a woman’s claims over a man’s. Even in the last century, where huge improvements have been made for equality, women have still been afraid to speak up. Especially in work-related situations, for example in the entertainment industry, if a superior at work harassed a woman, she most likely would not say anything, because she would be afraid of losing her job.
Roxanne Gay and numerous other women seem to have the belief that all men are guilty of these acts, and that every man is inherently misogynistic. It is a dumb generalisation of an entire gender, that makes up approximately half the population. Saying that all men are horribly misogynistic and that they are all guilty of sexual harassment is incredibly sexist. Gay, however, has the perfect solution: Men should have their own hashtag metoo, except they will declare with the hashtag that they too, have sexually harassed women. This does not really solve anything though, she only seems to want to prove her point. It honestly is not that hard to calculate that if approximately 44 million women have been harassed, approximately 44 million men must have been the harassers, otherwise it would not add up. Her entire idea that all men have done this, completely disregards the notion that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, she wants men to be considered guilty until proven innocent.
