It is no secret that we live in a materialistic society today. Everything is about money, money and yeah, money. There is a constant desire to always own more than everybody else, if you are not one of the people who owns a lot, you are a loser.
Chuck Palahniuk was able to write about this issue through another perspective in his short story Loser. The short story is about a typical TV show, but not as typical contestant. The contestant takes drugs before entering the show, because he and his friends thought it would be fun. Of course the drugs didn’t give him some kind of superpower they just made him pretty stupid. To win a prize you have to guess the price of some irrelevant things, as a potato.
The contestant doesn’t see the point of winning things like a vacuum cleaner, so he lose on purpose, and he literally make the competitor win, which unluckily dies of happiness.
The title Loser is simple but significant for the short story. The contestant was not only a loser in the competition, but also in his whole life. Or is he really? Maybe he broke his opportunity to achieve a lot of materialistic goods, but he did also broke important norms and the society’s standards. He didn’t give a damn about this whole flow of thoughts; the more you own the more important you are. So actually he released himself from the society’s fixed boundaries. If that makes him a loser, yeah then he is.
