It is always clear why a riot starts, or is it? The article “Depraved or deprived” written by Guy Jackson contains many different approaches for why the riots in England and many other cities started.
The article is about the terrible riots, which took place in America. The perpetrators smashed the shops’ windows and looted the stores.
The Conservative prime minister says it is unacceptable even if the perpetrators did it, because of poverty or if it was a political protest.
Ed Miliband who is Labour leader says the solutions for the perpetrators can’t be simple solutions. He also says that this is criminality and that no excuses were valid. He thinks the reasons for the riots are culture, poverty and lack of opportunity.
Tony Travers, of London School of Economics says it wasn’t some political riots or demonstration of any kind.
The biggest reason for why the riots started was the shooting of a man by police in the multi-ethnic north London suburb of Tottenham.
Professor Gus from the University of London says it was particularly young black men who took part in the riots. But David Lammy the member of parliament for Tottenham thinks it isn’t a problem between black and white, but between those who have a stake in society and those who don’t.
