I would say that there is 2 main characters in the story, Sarah and Paul. Brian is an important character as well, still I would only characterize him as a secondary character. His importance in the text would be, that his presence triggers the inner development that Sarah experiences throughout the story.
As I have mentioned, Sarah is one of the main characters. We get no information on how she looks, but we do get some insight on what’s going on inside her head.
From the fact that Paul and Sarah have been trying to have a baby for a few years now, we can only assume they are in a committed relationship. Sarah is not entirely convinced that she wants a baby though, she doesn’t want to give up smoking, drinking, travelling and eating curry.
Not only doesn’t she wants a baby, she doesn’t want a baby with Paul. “Unprotected sex followed by these fearful, hopeful waits for her period” (side- og linjetal?), the word “hopeful” indicates that she doesn’t want a baby. Then, she speaks with Brian, which makes her realize that she doesn’t feel happy with Paul, then goes on to leave him and find another man. She almost instantly gets pregnant with this new partner of hers. Which also signals that she just didn’t want to have a baby with Paul.
