Cultural differences can make a relationship either collide or draw the two people closer together.
Language and beliefs have a major significance when it comes to a relationship. There is no guarantee of success but being engaged and really pursuing towards success will potentially make the relationship between two people work. However, a successful relationship can seem impossible when two people from quite different cultures do not share the same values. It can lead to chaotic occurrences.
These are the circumstances in the short story: “Departure Time” by Tessa Green. The short story starts in medias res as there is no introduction nor information and the plot starts immediately, e.g.:” Patras station is tall and yellow with pale marble floors, more solid than the bus station and less crowded;(..)”
The short story is throughout the whole storyline narrated by a third-person who follows Samantha’s actions and thoughts, e.g:”A sudden panic makes her insides lurch and she hugs the carrier bag.”
Samantha is perceived as a vulnerable role as she is leaving her husband Nikos, and son, Alexander in Greece to regain her freedom in England.
In proportion to her outer character, she is British and tall with blonde hair.
When she met Nikos, she was young and naïve. Without knowing Nikos completely, she decided to make a radical change, to move to Greece and to marry him.
