I had heard stories about her, how she helped people escape. She helped the escape from the life as a slave. “Moses” or Harriet has always just seemed like a fairytale, but now she is here. She ran away from a plantation near the one my family is at. I don’t even remember living anywhere else, my mother Davo Abara gave birth to me just a few days after we arrived. And when I was six, I was told then I was supposed to go to work with her every morning, at four thirty in the morning. Now I am seventeen, and I automatically wake up at three in the morning. I know there is something better out there for my mom and me. My father died when I was eight, so I didn’t really know him that well. I told my mother about Harriet a few days ago and how we were supposed to leave at midnight today. I have never really expected to stay here for the rest of my life, so I never really made any friends. It is finally night and were supposed to leave in thirty minutes, but my mother keeps saying that she is too old and that she is just going to slow me down. Be a burden to me. So, I am leaving alone. I am going on the one journey that is going to define who I am going to be for the rest of my life. If I am going to be a slave, or a free woman. Maybe even with a degree. I met Harriet in the forest right next to the plantage I worked at, there was already a few others there. Harriet pointed us in the right direction and told us that when we saw a lantern by a house that meant we were welcome inside. And that is when I heard the dogs. So, I ran as fast as I could and after what felt like a million years, I found the house. Now I just have to make it from there...
