En analyse af D.H. Lawrences noveller 'The Horse Dealer's Daughter' og 'You Touched Me'.

“Man is irrational” says Sigmund Freud. Freud thus believes that man is irrational and is guided by instincts and urges that originate in early childhood. Basically, man is subject to biologically unconscious aggressive and sexual instincts. These instincts are also expressed in the two texts "The Horse Dealer’s Daughter" and "You Touched Me" by D.H Lawrence. In these two texts the reader is introduced to Matilda and Mabel who are the characters I want to focus on in my analysis. In order to understand these two young women, I will include Freud's personality model and some of his basic interpretations of the personality.

Mabel is one of the most central characters in the short story "The Horse Dealer's Daughter". Seen from the perspective of the reader Mabel is a dutiful woman who has always helped her brothers and father on the farm. Her mother died when she was a teenager and since then she has taken over the household work. She is described as a quiet woman who has an inner life she does not share with others. Accordingly, Mabel is controlled by her superego in the beginning, which means that she is driven by the norms at that time.
