” The quay at Smyrna” and ”A very short story”
A lack of detail in the personal relations is one of the many things that characterize the minimalistic writing style. This is shown in the two Hemmingway texts “The Quay at Smyrna” and “A very Short story”. These to texts carry’s examples of Hemmingway’s writing style which was minimalistic and often based on his own experiences.
The Quay at Smyrna is a shot story by Ernest Hemmingway; it was published in 1925 in a collection of short stories called “In our time”. The text has a first person narrator whom? starts out by telling us the things he finds strange at the Quay where he works narrates the text. We are never directly told that out narrator works at the Quay but he gives orders to a gunner´s mate, to go back to the ship, so we can conclude he is over him in the hierarchy. After giving orders to the gunner´s mate the narrator talks to the Turkish officer wanted the gunner´s mate punished, a man who tells him about an unusual episode, at this time the narrative voice shifts and is now the Turkish officer telling our prior narrator about a dead woman who turned rigid the moment he went over to her. The narrator flip happens at line 19 and turns back to the original narrator at line 26. This happens when the Turkish Officers story is finished and our Narrator tells that the people he worked with all where out on the pier checking out the Turkish Officer. This narrator flip is unusual, but the way it happens as if it was a long phrase that the Turkish Officers say without the readers’ awareness is typical minimalism.
