Since 23rd June 2016 a major headline in the worldwide news has been Brexit. Even though it was in 2016 we heard about it for the first time, it is still a discussed topic. This is because, the UK is trying to make a good deal for their withdrawal from the EU. Therefor the speech, that Theresa May gave 17th January 2017 is memorable. This was the very first time the deal for Britain was told in detail in public.
Theresa May was at the time the prime minister, and therefor she is used to talk to a bigger crowd. This means that she is very good at using modes of appeal. In fact, she uses all of them in her speech. Theresa May needs to appeal to logos and ethos because of her short time as prime minister, and the important topic, Brexit. She has to show her political situation and show herself as a strong leader. A leader the British citizens can rely on. At the same time, she wants to show the European Union that she will not accept a bad deal for Britain. She is very clearly at this point, which you can see with her amount of using the personal pronoun “I”. “I want this United Kingdom to emerge from this period of change stronger, fairer, more united and more outward-looking than ever before.” (p. 3, l. 14-15). In the sentence itself, she points out that the UK can and will change to a better country than ever before, which every British citizen can say. What makes this sentence remarkable, is that she uses “I” in the start to point out that it is her role to shape a brighter future for Britain. To support why Brexit is good for Britain and why they need a good deal, she uses pathos. Especially when it comes to the future generations. “And let us do it not for ourselves, but for those who follow. For the country´s children and grandchildren too.” (p. 6, l. 156-157). Every adult who has children wants them to have a great life. By referring to feelings, she is able to reach a very wide target group and make her words remarkable.
