The fall of the ship - Eyewitness account

April 12, 1985. The fall of she ship I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember walking on board this beautiful ship, hundreds of people gathering to watch it leave the dock. Seeing all those people waving farewell to everyone going on board, whilst we were so excited to just leave on this trip around the world. We were on the ship, leaving the dock and about 1,5 hours into the trip, we hit something. People started to scream, and of course, I panic and looked outside my window to see the ship slowly sinking in front of my eyes. The captain tells us to calmly, but quickly, get out stuff and go to the lifeboats. I ran out of my room, through the halls, down to the main hall, but then I see this man. Grey hair, old clothes, around the age of 80 maybe. He was calmly sitting there, eating his food like nothing was going on, with people sprinting from each sides. I told him, that he had to follow with me and get to safety, but he refused. He then proceeded to tell me that he had lung cancer, and that this trip would be the last thing he would ever be doing, and that he didn’t want to die alone in a hospital. I sit there, speaking with the man, but only for a short amount of time because after all, the clock was ticking. I then eventually got the man to follow with me, and get to the lifeboats. We got seperated, and I thought that I would never see him again. Many emotions were running through my body as I saw some passengers not getting onto the lifeboats and watching the enormous ship, slowly sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Many people around me were crying, but I were busy thinking about the old man. We were floating on the water for quite some time. Countless minutes eventually turned into hours, but then we finally got rescued. I had to search for a bit of time but luckily I found the old man, got his cellphone number, and was determined to meet him once again. The event was all over the news, countless of papers were writing about it, and people that were on the ship were speaking about the event on all kinds of interviews.
