The history of the United States of America officially begins in 1776. On July 4, the thirteen colonies claimed their freedom from the British Empire and signed the Declaration of Independence.
The first people to live in the United States as we know it now were the ancestors of Native Americans, they came to Alaska from Asia some 30,000 years ago, and started moving south.
European settlement and exploration of North America began with voyages from Christopher Columbus between 1492 and 1506. The first time he met with Native Americans was quite peaceful. however, both Europeans and North Americans died of an unknown disease.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, Spanish, French, Dutch and British colonies were established. The first successful English colony, Jamestown, was founded in 1607 in the present state of Virginia, followed by other settlements along the Atlantic coast. Britain became the most dominant colonial power with thirteen established colonies covering the entire East Coast.
The relationship between the colonies and the natives was not as peaceful as Columbus's early meetings. The main sources of conflict were land, trade and hunting and farming rights.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, tensions also increased between the colonies and Britain. A particularly problematic issue was taxes. As a formal part of British territory, the colonies had to pay taxes to the British government.
