Rosa Parks Who was Rosa Parks and what was her background? She was a black woman, who fought for women’s right and for the blacks rights. She grew up on a farm in the South with her maternal grandparents, mother, and younger brother Sylvester. They all were members of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), a century-old independent black denomination founded by free blacks. As a child, she went to an industrial school for girls and later enrolled at Alabama State Teachers College for Negroes, but she had to drop out, because her grandmother and later her mother became ill.
