My topic is racism in English speaking countries, and I have chosen Rosa Parks as my subtopic. The reason why I chose this topic, is because I wanted to know more about what kickstarted the civil rights movement in the United States. It’s very interesting to dive into the mind of the Afro-Americans, who had the courage to stand up against racism.
Furthermore, I think, it’s important to generate attention to Rosa Parks and what she did, because it shows the importance of standing up for your own values.
The incident
The incident took place on December the 1st 1955. Rosa Parks, who was an Afro-American, was on the bus as always, on her way home from work. Back then black and white people were separated. Therefore, the coloured people had to sit in the back of the bus, and the white in the front. At this particular day no more seats were available in the front of the bus, when a white passenger entered. The 4 black people, who were sitting on the front row in the black section were told to give up their seats. 3 of them did what they were told, but one didn’t move - this was Rosa Parks. As a result of non-cooperation, the bus driver called the police department, and she was arrested.
