Clothes are important for us all. Many people, both young and old, spent a lot of time, effort and money on all types of clothing. Clothes can help us feel good, look good and express who we are. However, sometimes we buy more clothes than we need, and eventually throwing a lot out. This is the dilemma we are discussing today. As a teenager, the interest in clothing is relative. some spend all their money on fashion clothing, and others don’t even care. Clothing produced in china for 1$, is getting sold for 70$. this makes the clothing industry one of the biggest industries in the world. But how sustainable is it really? And what are the consequences? Things that is important when buying clothes: When buying clothes, you need to be aware of how sustainable it has been made. If you are in doubt, and you don’t know how to check, most of the brands that are sustainable, clarifies and claims it on their website. Especially denim jeans are pollutant to the planet. one pair of denim jeans requires about 7.500 liters of water, so you sure can imagine how much water are wasted daily. Always reflect on your purchase - do I need a fourth pair of jeans or is it lavish. What affect and influences the youth to buy too much clothing? One of the most affecting things that makes me want to buy clothes are the social medias. If I see a celebrity wear a nice pair of jeans, it makes me think that I need them as well. as a matter of fact, teenagers like me are more aware of others opinion. That means, that if a person with low “self-esteem” sees his/her friends walk around with multiple bags, they think it is essential. This courses a bad consumption. Do you know how and where clothes are manufactured? When I was younger, I thought that clothes were made behind the check-out disk in the actual store. Know I have realized that clothes are being manufactured in a much bigger and more pollutant way. Some brands have been caught using child labor. This means that big brands are being monitored by government, so the system has been strictly improved. Most of the production of clothes are conducted in Asia because of the financial benefits. What do you do with clothes you don’t wear? The answer is second-hand. This is a concept, were you either sell or donate clothes to second-hand stores, were others can buy it and this could go on for ages. Another option is to sell it directly to a friend or acquaintance. This is the option I prefer. I use the social medias to sell clothes that I don’t wear often enough. I often buy expensive clothing, so being able to gain back a bit of the cost of a piece of clothing is always nice. I hope that you guys would be more aware of your shopping habits, so we can save the planet.
