The story takes place in a dull little village with about 300 people living in it. The lottery takes place in the square between the post office and the bank. The setting could be described as very normal and lazy in some way. The weather support this. It’s in the middle of the summer vacation and children are running around in the heat.

“The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day;”

2. Describe the change in the atmosphere. Give examples.

At the beginning of the story the atmosphere is very light hearted and friendly. People are having fun and talking to each other like everything is normal.

“Wouldn't have me leave m’dishes in the sink ,now, would you Joe,? and soft laughter ran through the crowd”

Later in the story when all the people are waiting to find who has the papir with the mark, the atmosphere gets a little more tense. Even though the people have tried it before, they still get relieved when the get the blank papir.

At the end of the story there's a complete shift in atmosphere when the Hutchinsons find out they drew the papir with the mark. Mrs Hutchinson's starts to scream and claims it’s not fair. The friendly feeling suddenly have disappeared, people doesn't seem evil but they don’t hesitate throwing stones at the victim.
