“After You, My Dear Alphonse” is about a boy named Johnny who brings home his new friend, African – American Boyd, for lunch. Johnny’s mom Mrs. Wilson assumed that since Boyd was African-American his family was poor, and did not have enough money to buy food and clothes. She says: “Now eat as much as you want to, Boyd.” Boyd tells that his mother does not work, but instead is taking TAKES care of the house. Mrs. Wilson asks ABOUT to his father and sister, and Boyd tells that his father is working and his sister is studding to be a teacher.
The short story is written in limited omniscient 3rd person narration and has an unnamed narrator, in a middle-class ENVIRONMENT. This reveals Mrs. Wilson’s character, because we do not have direct thoughts to OF the other characters. The setting could be in the 18th as well as in the 19th century, because Boyd’s father is working, and his mother is staying home, taking care of the house and the children.
Boyd is an African-American boy, from a working family. Boyd does not believe that his family lacks anything. Therefore, he refuses when Mrs. Wilson offered him Johnny's old clothes. He refuses saying:” But I have plenty of clothes, thank you” “And I don’t think my mother how to sew very well, and anyway I guess we buy about everything we need.” He does not see himself as different because of his skin color.
