Slavery is to buy a person and then you can do what you want with them. It started at the beginning of the 16th century in the british colonies in North America. The slaves were sailed from Africa and were called “Negroes”. People were kidnapped and forced into slavery. Slavery in America started in 1619, when 20 African slaves were brought ashore in the british colony Jamestown in Virginia. The African slaves were a cheaper and a better labor source than the European servants. The black slaves worked mainly in the tobacco, rice and cotton industry. The slavery were forbidden in England, it did not apply to the 13 british colonies in North America. Marriages between enslaved men and women were illegal, but many did marry and raise large families. But most of the owners usually did not hesitate to divide families by sale or removal. Sometimes they just killed one of them. The American civil war was a war from 1861 to 1865, between the North America and the South America. The civil war began primarily as a result of the long controversy over the enslavement of black people. 11 Southern states emerged from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. They fought against the Union which included all the states where slavery was abolished, and 5 states where slavery was still allowed. The Union was stated by Abraham Lincoln and the Confederate was stated by Jefferson Davis. In 1862 a series of battles resulted in great losses, far greater than ever before in US history. The Confederate states surrendered in 1865 and the Union won. The war cost 620,000 soldiers and an unknown number of civilians. It ended slavery and recreated the Union. The 13th amendment adopted on december 18, 1965, officially abolished slavery, but the southern states were still not completely against slavery and great challenges were expected for the blacks. During the 19th century The blacks were not treated well and were still affected by the time of slavery. Even as free people, blacks were not given the same rights in society as whites. Despite the fact that everyone had the right to vote, it was difficult for blacks to register as voters. There was also widespread separation between the races in the community. There were schools for white children and schools for black children. Also parks, hotels, restaurants, means of transport and more were divided so that the races were not mixed. In the 1960s the civil rights movement emerged as a result of the discrimination against blacks. One of the leaders of the movement was Martin Luther King. He advocated the principle of non-violence and was the leader of a campaign in which people boycotted the busses in protest of the segregation. Martin Luther King is also known for his speech in 1963 “I have a dream”. Many black people were trying to give rights to the blacks, and many of them were also killed. The 26th of december 1965 emerged the racist brotherhood Ku Klux Klan in Tennessee with the purpose of getting the whites reign again. It quickly developed into terror. wearing anonymous white caps, members peformed blood rituals, abduction and killings primarily on
