The story is told by the narrator, it is a third-person narrator. It is a description of written history. I think the narrator is unreliable because the dog does things that most dogs do not. I think the story takes place somewhere in Yugoslavia, the story takes place about the house and at the neighboring house. The text does not describe a social environment because Bojan lives with the housekeeper and she keeps her mostly herself. The narrator even lived in Yugoslavia back in the 1980s and 1990s, where a lot of bad things happened there. I think she may have brought some of her own experiences into the story. The title is called The Sentry, it indicates that someone in the text may be in the military. The father is a janitor in the military, and it caused him to suffer a lot of post-traumatic stress. The main character is Bojan at 10 years, you follow him from when he was 10 to his 11 years. Bojan is very excited about his dad coming home with a dog because he had never had a dog before. Bojan is even more excited about the dog than watching his father come home from war. Bojan plays the piano and he get bullied a lot in school. He comes out with his frustrations at shooting the dog, one day his dad saw it because he was standing in the doorway opening. The Bojan relationship with the dog is not so good, the dog does not really like Bojan. Every time Bojan comes home, the dog starts to growl and moan. You don't hear much about his relationship with the housekeeper because she mostly keeps her to himself. The Bojans relationship with his father is not so good either. He is a soldier, so he is not so often at home, and Bojan is not easy with his father being a soldier. They have a long-distance relationship because the father is in the field when Bojan is at the housekeeper's house. They don't see each other very often. Minor characters are the housekeeper Mrs. Senka, a tired old woman with dry yellow hair, who looks like the fringed robe she kept most to herself, except on Sundays, and when she was preparing a party for the woman in the assembly. The dog Kaiser is also a minor character, you hear a lot about that dog. It's almost three feet at the shoulder, a wide skull, wide feet and a pinched painted black face. You hear a few stories about how one destroys the neighborhood, either by killing cats or by hurting another dog badly.
