I think that this story is written about the 1920-1930 or maybe later, in a big city like London, because one of the characters is taking the train at work every day, and that is only normal in the big cities and this story is also relevant for today.
The story tells about Herbert and his grow up, before and after he turn 21. Before he turn 21 is he quite isolated from the outside world, because of his mom. His mom (Mrs. Sunbury) is the head of the family, take control over Herbert and his surroundings, she is taking all the decisions for him, and that is god for him. Herbert has always been mums boy. You can see that Mrs. Sunbury doesn’t like social life in the way she control Herbert because he is not allowed to play with the kids on the street.
” In due course Herbert grew old enough to go to school. Mrs. Sunbury was anxious because she had never let him play the children in the street. ”Evil communications corrupt the good manners,” she said. ”I always have kept myself to myself and I always shall keep myself to myself.”
