“But we’re tired of carrying it. We've done enough. It's time for man to step up” this is how she expresses her opinion in the article “Dear men, it’s you too”. Roxanne Gay is an American writer and an author of “Bad Feminist” a best-selling essay collection of The New York Times. Most of Gay’s published work deals with the analysis and deconstruction of feminist and racial problems through the perspective of her own experiences of race, gender identity, and sexuality. On 19th of October 2017, The New York Times published a work of Gay’s called “Dear men, it’s you too”. This articles is written especially for all the men as a wakeup call, to wake all the men up so they could stand up and do something about what they’ve done without realizing how much it affects women and how they live in their everyday lives. In this analysis we will be focusing on two of the big 5 which is Audience and stylistic Devices.
The intended audience of Roxanne Gay’s “Dear men, it’s you too” is the majority of the male population and people that have been involved in any kind of sexual harassment. This can be seen on the 1st page where she tells us “We’re tired of carrying it. We’ve done enough. It’s time for men to step up” This shows us that she knows that the female population is already aware about the harm of sexual harassment. Therefore, her intention is to educate the male population about the topic. On the other it is likely that men wouldn’t read her writings, hence she intends to encourage women to stand up for themselves and be more public about sexual harassment. The evidence for this is the title itself “Dear men, it’s you too”. She is writing to a audience where the majority of the is the female population because they are ones interested and have experience with this issue, but nevertheless the “intended” audience is the majority of the male population who should admit their moments.
