Mr. Stowe is in Carlie's words a pale, thin, and indefinite man with a voice dry as a biscuit.
The father runs a tobacco-shop under their house. He does not have much of a relationship with his son, Charlie.
"he did not love his father; his father was unreal to him, awraith, pale, thin, indefinite, who noticed him only spasmodically and left even punishment to his mother". (page 92, line 17-19).
This tells us that Charlie doesn't love his father and that the father has probably given away the punishment to the mother because he's often out of town, which probably made Charlie dislike his father even more.
The title refers to the dad betraying England; I presume he is working for the Huns as an intelligence-spy or something like that. He is the opposite of the mother. "Well," he said, "there's nothing to be done about it, and I may as well have my smokes."
Charlie Stowe -
12-year old Charlie Stowe is the main character. During the night, Charlie sneaks downstairs to steal a cigarette from the tobacconist's shop owned by his father. Charlie’s mother is only briefly mentioned.
Almost right off the bat, we learn that Charlie gets mocked by the boys from his County School since he has never tried smoking.
