Charlie Stowe is a 12-year-old boy, who is growing up during World War 2. He lives with his father and mother and he attends County School.
His relationship to his mother is really good. “For his mother he felt a passionate demonstrative love; her boisterous presence and her noisy charity filled the world for him; from her speech he judged her the friend of everyone, from the rectors wife to the dear queen”. This tells us that Charlie and her mother has a great relationship, and that Charlie loves her dearly. But for his father he fells quit different, and believes that he is unreal to him “but he did not love his father, his father was unreal to him, a wraith, pale, thin, indefinite, who only noticed him spasmodically and left even punishment to his mother”
Charlie has never got much attention from his father, and that is way Charlie doesn’t care much about him. Until in the very end of the story were he sees his father in the tobacco shop with the two men late at night. Somehow his father gets interesting by that, and Charlie can for the first time identify himself with his father: he also does things in the dark, which frightened him.
