Who is the young man? What do we know about his people?

The young man is called John, he lives with his family. Two brothers, which are very good hunters (as they tell us on the first page, My brothers are good hunters, and gave me the good piece of meat and the warm corner by the fire), and a father wich is toled to be the priest of the Hill people (which is also mentioned on the first page)The Hill peoples is a tribe (Mentioned on page 13, when John's singing. I'm John, son of John. My people are the hill people). John has initiated into the priesthood himself when he comes of age (Mentioned on the first page). Everyone is banned/forbidden from traveling to the place of god (Mentioned on page one) Only the one who's initiated to become a priest or the priest isn't forbidden, and because they can purify the metals and other materials, so they don't die from disease or a curse, etc. (mentioned on page 11) John have a dream of travel to the deads place/gods place all be himself, he wants to explore the world and know the truth about it all. Not because he doesn't trust the things his father has told him, but he dreamed about the place of god’s and since that he has been curious and wanted to know the truth. He does get the "license" to travel all alone to the place of god, and he does find out the truth about the place, and how it was burned down by the humans themselves, and it wasn't god, demons or spirit. It was normal humans like him. Johns also mentioned on the last page Lincoln, Moses, Biltmore, as gods, but then say that they were men who built the city, and When he became the chief priest, he is going to take his whole tribe with him over the great river, to the place of gods, the place new york, and build it up from scratch again.
