The Amish church was founded in Europe in 1693 by a small group of Christians who held that it was wrong to baptize infants. They believed that only an adult can freely choose Christ and be baptized. The Amish were harshly persecuted for this belief and by 1860 had all migrated to the United States. The Amish live in communities alongside their “English” neighbors but maintain a separate culture and normally do not allow themselves to be photographed.

God is the most important thing in their life. Right after God comes your parents, you are supposed to obey them, and do everything they say. (The children are taught so)

They have almost no contact with the outside world.

When the Amish children turn 16, their whole life changes. You start dating, shopping at the mall, dressing English, go to the movie theaters, go bowling, watching tv, getting a haircut, go to parties, get a car, get drunk and sleep around.

When the Amish turn 16, they begin a period known in Pennsylvania Dutch as rumspringa. They are released from Amish restrictions and can explore the English world. Rumspringa lats from a few months to several years, until a young person can decide whether to join the Amish church or not. (18-21 years old) They have do make a difficult choice, and if they chose Amish, they must follow the rules for the rest of their life. Many of these kids are very confused about what they want, because they want to be like their parents, but they also want jeans, phones and so on.
