Analytical Essay - FictionShuggie Bain by Douglas StuartThe novel Shuggie Bain, written in 2020 by Douglas Stuart, follows the 11-year-old Hugh “Shuggie” Bain as he grows up in Glasgow with his mother Agnes. This analytical essay will summarize the key parts of the excerpt from chapter twenty-four, before analysing the theme, characters and setting of the novel. It will be shown how the novel deals with a serious theme of alcoholism, and children who are neglected and forced to grow up at a young age.

At the beginning of our excerpt Shuggie wakes up with his mother Agnes sitting on his bed. She is coughing, and he can tell that she has been drinking again. She asks if he would like to stay home from school, but he is hesitant, saying that he has already missed school too frequently recently. He knows what she really wants, namely for him to go out and collect cash for her child support.

She would spend the money on drinks before thinking of anything else, and we’re told that she had been left naked by somebody on New Year’s Eve, which has fueled her drinking problem so that she was now drinking to forget about herself and her pain and loneliness.
