In a BBC podcast from 2014, during a segment called “6 Minute English”, the podcasters Rob and Neil talks about the topic dark tourism, of discusses their thoughts on it.

During the beginning of the segment, they spend a moment to establish for the listener what dark tourism is. In short terms, dark tourism allows curious people to visit areas that centers around death and terror.

They go on to talk about a few existing places that people visit, as well as a few places that might become a hot topic for dark tourism, before they start talking about why people want to visit these places. Doctor Phillip Stone who researched the phenomenon says that while the packed deal dark tourism comes in is new, being fascinated by other people’s death is not.

At last, they talk about the ethics of visiting these places, and how it should be treated with respect.

I can with confidence say, all people are curious. I can even more confidently say that this curiosity leads us to seek out information of what we all know, are controversial topics. During my 9th grade field trip to Berlin, we visited an old prison where people had been wrongfully placed. During my last summer break to Langeland or Steves, walking through underground, closed military bases is customary. No questions asked. If this is dark tourism can be debated, but it is placed on a blurry line, inviting people in to see and learn about the history that is left behind. And about its death.
