Before i had watched the Video “Dark Girls” I thought of some topics it could be about. But mostly I thought it was about racism. Often when you speak about African American and mentions them as dark, there could be a slight taste of racism. With this I mean that when you separate people because of their skin tone and not by their cultural origin, you can say that you put people in a box because of their color. I know it’s tough to say that that’s racism, but in a small term there is something wrong about calling people something specific because of cultural differences. This was why the first thing I thought of was racism.
A group of African-American women discuss the phenomenon, “Dark Girls”. They are sharing their thoughts on the social and cultural problems sat in context to this topic. The video features interviews with women sharing their own experiences as dark skinned African-Americans. There is a scene with a little dark girl sitting at a desk, with some drawings of a girl with different variety of skin tones, in front of her. A woman asks her some questions, who are the pretty girl, who is the dumb girl and so on. Every time a negative question is asked, she points at the darkest girl at the drawings and every time a positive question is asked she points at the drawing with the lightest skin tone. This shows how early these beliefs are implanted in the dark girls.
