Already the title "day trippers" suggests that the story could be about tourists. The story is describing the way the main characters act. The story is about Parminder andGurpreet, who are old friends at a university. A year later, Parminder and Gurpreet meet by chance in a hotel when they are on a business trip. They recognized each other and immediately felt a mutual attraction. The chemistry between them was right and they agreed on a weekend vacation in the city of Leicester. A city in which none of them had visited. In a hotel room they hear fireworks, and when they go to check, they discover the Mela festival, an Indian tradition. Childhood memories flow through both of them and they hurry to hold on to them. Through the streets filled with bright lights , they created a newborn love not only for the culture but also for each other. They realize that this is what they have been longing for, they begin to feel like tourists in their own culture: “The days and weekends were no longer enough. Gurpreet and Parminder knew they didn’t want to be tourists and day trippers into their own cultures anymore”. The reject their Indian culture, the idea of having a romantic partner from the same culture. They marry outside of their culture, and begin a bond with each other and helps them rediscover their culture.
