Tell the Women We're Going

The short story “Tell the women we’re going” by Raymond Carver (1982) takes place in the U.S around the south areas.

In the story we meet Bill Jamison and his best friend Jerry Roberts, who is also the more dominated one in their friendship. We also meet their wives: Bill’s wife, Linda, and Jerry’s wife, Carol.

The story is about two very close friends, Bill and Jerry, who have always been as two of a kind and shared everything together.

In Tell the Women We’re Going by Raymond Carver we have the theme of friendship, separation, change and violence.

The story is narrated in the third person by an unnamed narrator and begins with the reader being introduced to the two main protagonists, Bill Jamison and Jerry Roberts.

Early in the story, we learn that both Bill and Jerry liked to ‘bang’ the same girls when they were growing up. The narrator’s use of the word ‘bang’ is important as in many ways it acts as a foreshadowing of what will happen at the end of the story. "and dated and banged the same girls – whichever came up as a matter of course"(P.1, ll.8-9)
