“They’re not your husband” is written by Raymond Carver, who was an American short story writer and poet. During the 1980’s, he contributed to the recovery of the American short story in literature. He died on August 2nd 1988, in Washington.

The story concerns a man called Earl Ober and his wife Doreen. She works as a waitress at a 24-hour coffee shop, and Earl is a salesman but is between jobs. One late evening, Earl is out drinking (while the kids are at home) and visits the shop, to get some coffee. Then he overhears some guys saying that the waitress (who is Doreen) looks fat and that they would never be together with a woman like her. He can’t handle to listen to it, so he leaves the shop.

The next morning, Earl asks Doreen to look at herself in the mirror because he wants her to go on a diet, just to loose a few pounds. They agree about that she should stop eating for a few days, to see if there is any progress.

Every morning he puts her on the scale, and within three weeks she has lost five pounds.

The colleagues at the coffee shop are now saying things. They say that she is too pale and they are afraid that she is losing too much weight. But Earl can’t see the issue.
