The movie begins with astronomy grad student Kate Dibiasky, played by Jennifer Lawrence, and her professor Dr. Mindy, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, discovering a comet that will collide with Earth. When they alert the government and the President, played by Meryl Streep, about this, they care more about polls and profits than the comet heading towards Earth. The film's strongest aspect is the acting. The portrayal of the two astronomers by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence is excellent. A good example of this is when they get interviewed and Jennifer Lawrence has a complete meltdown. Meryl Streep’s portrayal of an arrogant and ignorant president is also fantastic and hilarious. However, a lot of the movie's comedy feels forced and over the top, which can be distracting from the plot.
