Marcus is a university student, and his father has gotten him a job for holiday work (in summer) at a plant nursery. He feels as if he is not a part of the work and doesn’t fit in, like he’s a bit overdressed, while the rest are wearing dirty clothes. Marcus is sort of a misfit, even though he goes into his new job hating it as much as everyone else.

He comes back into contact with Rewi who is a childhood friend. Rewi teaches him how to work but then tells him he is going to lose his job. Maybe due to Marcus taking his place.

Marcus finds the work boring and difficult, and he is kind of isolating himself from everyone else when he feels they don’t understand him. The story itself has Marcus struggling, he’s being taught some important life- and work lessons.

Påstand:

Marcus struggles to fit in at the plant nursery because he feels disconnected from the people around him and is focused on maintaining his privilege.

Citat:

“People stood around in clusters, pretending to be busy as they shot surreptitious glances in his direction. They wore baggy tracksuit pants, faded jeans and oversized T-shirts. Marcus mentally sifted through his wardrobe. What could he wear tomorrow so he didn’t stand out so much?”
