Jenna was born in Coachella Valley, California, the fourth of six siblings. Her father, Edward Ortega, is a businessman of Mexican descent, and her mother, Natalie Ortega, is a nurse of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage. Both parents were supportive of their daughter’s desire to become an actress, even though Jenna Ortega struggled early on to find roles. She later commented that she was often rejected by casting directors because she “did not have the look they were going for.”
Jenna said that she feels a sense of safety from her friends and family that help her deal with the more challenging parts of her career; she added that her family "keep my feet on the ground". Jenna believes that growing up in an industry dominated by adults accelerated her maturing process. Jenna stated she was vegan "for a really long time". She became pescatarian (vegan who eats fish) while filming Wednesday in Romania.
