The whaler is an Irish short story from 2000, about a little boy and a whaler. The settings are in Ireland in a small Idyllic fishing village near the sea along the Donegal coast. The story takes place in May, an early morning throughout an hour.
The boy it the narrator and about eleven years old I think. He is a good and innocent boy. He is good a geographic and a daydreamer, who likes to be for him self. He has a bright mind. His dream is to go traveling like the whaler. He doesn’t think that his village is big enough. You can se it when he describes his big idol. “He had left our town-land as a boy. Too small. Too myopic. Too trivial. Line 8”
One morning, when he is on his way home with groceries for his mother, he meets his great idol, the whaler. He first stands in sharp disbelieve and when he realizes that the whaler is defecating he is very embarrassed. The whaler don’t seem to care and starts talking to the boy and before they are finish talking, the whaler have told the young boy, that he have never seen a whale in his life, and have had an affair with the boys teacher, Eileen Early. Even when she was still married. That chocks the young boy and changes his life forever.
