The narrator in The Whaler is the first person. He is an admirer of The Whaler.
He is clever at school, The Whaler says.
“I hear you’re a clever lad at school. Eileen Early tells me y’are”
Eileen Early is his teacher. He likes her, and she is the reason that he likes God. Once she spoke to the class about the infinite mercy of God’s love. Now the narrator thinks that God seems like soft and reasonable man.
The narrator likes to have an ideal. In this short story both The Whaler and God is ideals for him. They are both characters he admires.
He took by surprise that The Whaler actually wants him to sit down and talk. But then the narrator’s point of view revolves.
