“The Whaler” is a short Irish story that appeared in 2000. The story is about a boy and a whaler. The little boy is the narrator. We don’t have a name for the narrator/the little boy, just “I”. We neither know the age of the boy, but probably he is 12 years old. Because he is in the transition from being a child, to be a teenager. He is an adult man who is looking back in time, when he is meeting the whaler. The whaler is his big idol. He is looking up to the whaler, but in the end he realized that the whaler is a human like everybody else. Probably the story takes place in Ireland, but we are not sure. The place is described with hills, fields and seas.

The theme in the story is the transition. The little boy finds out that things not are that you wanted to bed. In the start the boy is looking up to the whaler, in the middle the boy is looking him in the eyes, and least the boy is looking down at the whaler, because he find out that the whaler has flirted with his teacher, and everything is a lie. The little boy find that disgusting. You can clearly feel the difference of the ages between the little boy and the whaler. The whaler and the boy are talking about the hills at a time. The boy thinks it looks like a whale, and the whaler thinks it looks like a woman’s tits. The boy has not on that time reached the point of life, where he thinks of things like them. When he is finding out that the whaler not is a real whaler he lose a lot for him. It is after the whaler says this:
