I believe we all have or at least have had role models in our lives. People we look up to – who have qualities which we would like to acquire. In our childish stupidity we thought that the people we looked up to were perfect in all aspects of life – we had no “logical” sense of the fact that this was impossible. As we have grown up we have come to understand that every human being fails and is
not perfect, but coming from the point where the idols are perfect to the realization of the fact that no humans can do everything right is a long and hard process filled with disappointment and letdowns. This is the phase, which the narrator in the story was going through. In school the narrator was doing very well. He loved reading about whalers and whaling and his teacher thought that he was doing a great job.
“And they (the books on whaling) froze my blood and boiled my imagination.”
He really looked up to these whalers and what they were doing and he would love to do the same.
